SubClear

How do I cancel a subscription under the new rules?

If you signed up online you must be able to cancel online, in a straightforward way, without steps that are not reasonably necessary.

For subscriptions taken out from 1 January 2027, the business must let you end the contract in a straightforward way. If you entered into the contract online, you must be able to cancel online. The business cannot make you phone a call centre or write a letter.

The process must not include steps that are not reasonably necessary. In practice that rules out mandatory exit surveys, repeated confirmation screens, and cancel links hidden several menus deep. Retention offers are allowed, but the draft guidance says they cannot frustrate or drag out the cancellation.

You should receive confirmation, and the cancellation takes effect according to the contract, typically at the end of the period you have paid for, unless you are inside a cooling-off period, in which case you are entitled to a refund.

Keep a record of the date and how you cancelled. If the business ignores it or keeps charging, contact your bank or card provider about the payments, and complain to the business in writing.
